Introduction to the
University of Utah
Message from the President
Dear faculty member:
The success of the University of Utah is closely tied to the
educators and researchers who advance its central mission. This
Faculty Handbook has been created to provide you with essential
information about the University in a format that is quickly accessible.
Specifically, the Faculty Handbook presents your rights and
responsibilities as a faculty member, as well as where you can find
solutions to problems you may encounter while performing your duties.
This version is the first to be published in a web-based format, with
links to both University policies and web-based information contained on
other University sites. I trust it will be useful to you in all
facets of your career here at the University of Utah.
I am very proud of the University of Utah and its world-class
faculty. Our faculty members exemplify the combination of
intellectual rigor, engaged service, and teaching commitment that
ensures a bright future for this great institution. Through your
work, the University continues year after year to ably accomplish the
mission its first chancellor proclaimed: engage in “the diffusion
of…knowledge” to ensure that “all people…would be elevated.”
Thank you for selecting the University of Utah as the place to teach
and to continue your quest for knowledge.
Sincerely yours,
Michael K. Young
14th President of the University of Utah
